'Times have changed' & Profile of West Bowling

THE NEWLANDS MILL DISASTER

After hearing of the tragic death of Bradford born mother Angela Burgess, 36, Bradford Trident Neighbourhood Wardens Cath Stone and Dibbs Storey decided to go on a sponsored bike ride to raise funds to re-unite the four children of the family.

Angela’s sister Linda Bristow, Office Manager at Newby Primary School in West Bowling says, ‘Angela had been looking forward to starting a new life in Holland with her children and partner Peter and had travelled to Holland to begin house hunting when she collapsed and died.  Angela’s youngest son Byron, aged just 2, is now living in Holland with his father Peter.  Danica, 8, and Joshua, 7, are living with their natural father Dave in Leeds, whilst Jade, 17, remains in the family home.’

‘My dream is to arrange for the children to spend some time together in Holland as a family unit once again and to ensure that the three older children do not lose touch with their youngest brother Byron.’

Wardens Cath and Dibbs declared, ‘It was a tragedy that has left four children without a mum. We were so saddened when we heard this story that we decided to help reunite them by undertaking a sponsored cycle of the 128 mile route of the Leeds Liverpool canal which we did 12 and 13 September to help raise funds to re-unite them. We raised over £1,000 at the last count and money is still coming in.’

‘Angela collapsed on the 14th May from a sudden brain aneurysm, never regained consciousness and died on the 16th May.  The family made some really brave decisions during this horrendous time and agreed to allow Angela’s organs to be transplanted.  This meant someone in the same hospital benefited from receiving her heart’ they added.

Anyone wanting to add to the sponsorship should ring Cath and Dibbs on the Trident Wardens number 01274 731678.

Cath and Dibbs are pictured at Five Rise Locks, Bingley, on the route of their ride.
Police Team celebrate six years.

One of the first Bradford Trident initiatives was to support the Trident Police Team - police officers dedicated to patrolling the area. In the six years since they started in 2000 they have had a dramatic affect and have been a positive impact on local people’s lives. Indeed latest figures show crimes per 1,000 population in the Trident area have dropped to 60 from a peak of 105 - less than the district average of 64.

Local Councillors Greenwood, Khan and Ikram all agree the team is doing a great job stating, ‘Burglaries, car crime and anti-social behaviour are all down, which makes our communities safer to live in. There are still areas of concern but we are all working hard together in the fight against crime. We congratulate the Trident Police Team on six years of success.’

Currently the team of four police constables and four police community support officers are PCs Salim Ismail, Trevor Brown, Chris Green and Dave Royston and PCSOs Paul Aston, Rebecca Simpson, Zaheer Bulbul and Pauline Smith.

Let us know…

Sgt Osman Khan, of the Bradford South Neighbourhood Policing Team, said, ‘These officers work solely in the Trident area and are doing a fantastic job, resolving local issues and developing contacts and partnerships. An important part of their role is to know the community inside out, its geography and the problems people who live in these areas face on a daily basis, be it from anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and vandalism or drugs offences for example. The officers get heavily involved in community life in the area and attend Trident and PubWatch meetings. Our officers are always happy to speak to you and give advice or discuss any concerns and you can contact them on the numbers given at the end of this article’ added Sgt Khan. ‘We also strongly encourage the public to pass on information about any criminal activity that is taking place in the area. Let us know and the police, our partner agencies and the community can all work together with the common aim of ensuring our neighbourhoods are pleasant places to live in.’

‘If you know someone who is involved in crime then just let us know whatever information you have and let us do the rest. No-one should have to put up with criminal behaviour taking place in their neighbourhoods and we are committed to doing all we can to tackle it.’

  Lidl and Large.

Huge changes are coming to Manchester Road. A massive new residential development and a brand new supermarket are set to add to the area's continued regeneration.

The Big One!

A twenty storey apartment block, set to be Bradford's  tallest building, is at the centre of the scheme to develop the 5 acre former Reyner House site on Manchester Road.

Asquith Properties, worked together with one of the country's leading architectural practices, Glenn Howells Architects, to put together the scheme which won an international competition to become the Preferred Development Partner of the site.

Asquith Properties is the largest residential city-centre developer in Bradford and is at the forefront of the city's rebirth as a vibrant 21st-century city. The company uses state-of-the-art design and construction, with an emphasis on architectural excellence and quality.

'We are delighted to announce Asquith Properties as winners,' says Chair of Bradford Trident Councillor Ian Greenwood. 'They understand the importance of the site which stands at one of the major gateways to the city and we are confident we can work with them to create buildings of character and substance. Asquith has produced some initial images of how the scheme might look. We now need to work closely with local residents and our partners to guide the development of the proposals.'

Russell Baker of Asquith properties comments, 'Winning the competition is great news for us. We are looking forward to working closely with Bradford Trident to develop the scheme. We envisage the work happening over four phases to be completed by December 2010. It will include residential and commercial units and will feature high and low rise buildings. Up to 800 apartments will be created. Other elements include high quality office space and the potential for a 120 bedroom hotel with conference and banqueting facilities.'

Chief Executive of Bradford Trident Steve Hartley adds, 'This development is of major significance to the Trident area and to the city of Bradford. The added bonus is that income from the scheme will be re-circulated back into the area for the benefit of local residents.'

The development will also include public spaces, footpaths and cycle ways which will tie into the Living Street initiative that runs through the area.

New Lidl store set to brighten shopping

A brand new Lidl supermarket is set to be built on land adjacent to Pakington Street. Consisting of 12,000 sq ft of sales space the store is due to open before the year end. It's mixture of food and household goods at great prices will be a real boost to convenient shopping in the area.

Ingrid and Co put best foot forward.

Hairdresser Ingrid Dawn and her salon staff raised hundreds of pounds towards Macmillan Cancer Relief when they took part in the 5.5 mile Shipley Stride sponsored walk on Sunday May 21.

Ingrid has been supporting the charity since 2002 by keeping collection boxes on her counter that have raised almost £1,000 and the walk, at last count, added over £300 more.

The walkers got off to an early start and are pictured here outside the salon on Birch Lane. Left to right are Ingrid Dawn, Vikki Lupton, Dawn Dixon and Samantha Wilson.

Sports fun at Newby.

Youngsters from local schools flocked to Newby Primary for a Sports Fun Day organised by Bradford Youth Development Partnership (BYDP).

As well as featuring conventional sports the day included an inflatable human table football game and a giant gladiators game. Saleh Ahmed of BYDP (pictured) says, 'These events give young people a taste of organised sport and let them have a laugh too. Today has also been supported by Bradford Vision and Connexions which means each participant goes away with a goody bag'.

New anti child abuse text service coming soon .

Following research conducted into youth advice services and current trends, the NSPCC and ChildLine are soon to launch Speechless, a campaign targeted at offering advice on many types of abuse to 12-16 year olds. The service is delivered via mobile phone handsets, with potential clients texting requests for information on abuse to 60022.

Should they wish to, young people can have a live text conversation with a Speechless advisor, meaning the advisor and young person can communicate directly through SMS messaging, promptly and discreetly via the clients‚ mobile phone.

The service is being promoted through the use of face-to-face street teams who will talk to young people about the service on offer and how to use it. Buses, billboards, phone boxes, local community websites, as well as youth advice groups will all be used to help deliver the message. Local radio will also be used, with radio stations The Pulse and Sunrise Radio due to advertise the service.

Due to launch shortly
